Species and Hunting Methods
RED DEER (CERVUS ELAPHUS)

This is the best trophy we have to offer, because of its excellent quality and availability. The legal hunting period for red deer is from March 15th to July 3Oth, the first 20 or 30 days being the most advantageous. This is the rut season: it is at this time that the males fight for dominance over the females. The hunter is led by a guide into the forests on foot or on horseback early in the morning and in the evening. The roaring of the stags will make it possible to locate them and make an approach. After the rut ends in mid-April, stag hunting continues in the open fields where the deer come to feed, and where they can be observed at ease to assess trophy quality. More than 40 stags per season of up to 210 points CIC and more than 10 kilos (22 lbs., cleaned head weight) are obtained here. We recommend a 30-06 Springfield calibre (or similar) as a minimum; shooting range is approximately 55 to 165 yards (50 to 150 meters).

BLACK BUCK (ANTILOPE CERVICAPRA)

This species originated in India and was introduced in Argentina in the early 1900’s, where it reproduced with ease until the population reached extraordinary proportions. For this species hunting is allowed year round, and here at Pichu-Có it is done on foot or on horseback when the herds break from the cover of the forest. Shooting range is about 150 to 200 meters, but approaching them is difficult because of their highly developed sense of vision and the speed at which they can run. Approximately 20 males of up to 23 inches (58 cm.) are obtained per year.

PUMA (FELIX CONCOLOR)
NOTE: The government of the province of La Pampa has
suspended puma hunting, effective February 2007, until further notice.

This species is native to La Pampa, and its ability to adapt to a changing environment has helped it not only to survive but also to increase in numbers. Here at Pichu-Có pumas are present year round, but quantities vary according to the time of year. They are most plentiful in late winter and early spring, when the young of their prey are born. Hunter and guide wait for the puma from late afternoon until nightfall in a blind placed near a watering hole. Live bait (lambs, goats) is also used to attract them. They are often seen in the early morning during the rut season while stalking deer. However, pumas are difficult to find and it is not possible to guarantee that every hunter will obtain one. If a client is especially interested in this species, arrangements can be made to visit other farms in the area to increase his chances of finding a puma. But a true puma hunt cannot be guaranteed.
